H.R.H. Princess Bajrakitiyabha attended the Symposium on Fighting Against Transnational Organized Crime and Legal Safeguards for the Belt and Road Initiative

  As part of her visit to China, H.R.H. Princess Bajrakitiyabha from the Kingdom of Thailand attended the Symposium on Fighting Against Transnational Organized Crime and Legal Safeguards for the Belt and Road Initiative on September 8, 2017 in Beijing, and delivered a keynote speech. H.R.H. the Princess was accompanied by H.E. Piriya Khempon, Ambassador of Thailand to China, and H.E. Guan Mu, China's Former Ambassador to Thailand.

  Princess Bajrakitiyabha spoke highly of China's Belt and Road Initiative, and expressed the view that this initiative could further promote win-win cooperation and achieve sustainable development in all countries. The Princess called on all States to take precautionary measures to prevent or minimize negative impacts of transnational organized crime on the Belt and Road development. The Princess also suggested that security concerns should be incorporated into the design of the Belt and Road projects, and that attention should be given to safeguards at local, national and international levels. The Princess further suggested that the planning of the Belt and Road project serve sustainable development and rule of law, so as to achieve more balanced growth.

  H.E. Dr. Xu Hong, Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China presided over the Symposium. In his opening remarks, Dr. Xu Hong pointed out that transnational organized crime was a key challenge to the Belt and Road development and seriously hindered the economic growth of the world; in some regions, transnational organized crime was closely linked with terrorism, posing a great threat to regional security and stability. He stressed that transnational corruption undermined equality and justice as well as sound business environment. He highlighted that it was a compelling and urgent task for countries to enhance international cooperation in combating transnational organized crime, to ensure the successful implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative. The panelists deliberated on the new challenges posed by transnational organized crime in the context of the Belt and Road development, and offered their strategies and suggestions to address these challenges from international law perspectives.

  Before the Symposium, Professor Dou Xiankang, President of Wuhan University awarded the honorary doctor's degree to H.R.H. the Princess.

  This Symposium was part of the annual training session organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China under the China-AALCO Exchange and Research Program on International Law. 50 legal officers from 35 AALCO member States, Laos (a non-member), the AALCO Secretariat, and the Secretariat of the African Union, as well as more than 400 students and faculties from China University of Political Science and Law, China Foreign Affairs University and University of International Business and Economics joined the Symposium.
